ODESSA, Texas – The St. Edward's women's soccer team came away with a 5-0 victory over UT-Permian Basin Monday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field. The victory saw contributions from several players as the Hilltoppers stayed atop the Heartland Conference standings.
UT-Permian Basin (2-12-1, 0-6 HC) threatened to score early but
LORRIE SANTOY denied Mallory Martin's attempt in the fifth minute. Santoy was only tested twice on the day but came away with saves both times.
Valenica Mobley started the scoring off in the 21st minute as she tipped in a rebound to give St. Edward's a 1-0 lead.
MIKAYLA ENGEL scored in her second consecutive game as she put away a header in the 30th minute. Engel was set up by a great cross from
KELLY ANDRUS streaking down the right sideline to earn her first assist on the year.
Just before halftime, St. Edward's found its third goal of the half as
VIKTORIA MALMROS came away with her first goal of the season. Malmros delivered the third goal from the top of the box on the right side as
SYDNEY CARROLL delivered a great pass by the defense for the assist.
The Hilltoppers won a number of corners early in the second half as they continued to press the action. They were rewarded in the 55th minute as
JESSICA TRAVES delivered a cross to the near post.
JENNIFER BOUDREAU leaped to connect with the cross as she headed the ball into the goal to give the Hilltoppers a 4-0 lead.
Just before time expired, Traves found her first goal of the season by way of some terrific teamwork from
LAUREN HELLER and
RIANA SOOBADOO. Soobadoo came away with the ball and started the break. She passed the ball forward to Heller who quickly dropped it off to Traves. Her finish provided St. Edward's with the 5-0 decision, and its sixth-straight victory.
When asked about the offense, Head Coach Nick Cowell said, "We talked to our team yesterday about how in our attacking style, we want multiple ways of scoring and multiple goal scorers, so that opponents can't key in on any one attacking player". The Hilltoppers are nearly at full strength and Cowell stated, "It has been good to have in particular Jessie Traves back in the lineup. She provides the team with composure and confidence."
St. Edward's will host St. Mary's in another clash of the Battle of the Saints rivalry in its next match. When asked about the upcoming match, Cowell said with excitement that, "The St Mary's game is on Saturday and we are really looking forward to our team continuing to improve. The Battle of the Saints games are always intense and we welcome the level of competition we will face."
