DALLAS, Texas - The St. Edward's Women's Soccer team took on Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist Saturday evening and came away with a 1-0 double-overtime victory thanks to
LAUREN HELLER's goal in the 101
st minute.
Both teams left everything on the field over the 101 minutes and combined for 28 shots. St. Edward's (5-4, 1-0 HC) dialed up the pressure early as
JENNIFER BOUDREAU fired a shot on goal in the 10th minute that was saved by Patriot goalkeeper Kerry Edwards.
Dallas Baptist (4-3-1, 0-1 HC) responded by challenging
LORRIE SANTOY and the Hilltopper defense on multiple occasions throughout the first half. Dallas Baptist's Dixie Kurrus fired a shot that Santoy saved in the 12th minute and Ashley Cox was denied by Santoy in the 30th minute. The Patriots, again, made a push to score in the 32nd minute off of a cornerkick, but Santoy stopped Lindsey Eccles' shot to preserve the 0-0 halftime score.
Santoy started the second half the same way she ended the first, denying Ashley Cox on multiple occasions. The Hilltoppers attempted to counter the attack in the 57th minute as
VALENCIA MOBLEY tried to find the back of the net but Edwards was up to the task to deny the goal.
The game hit a turning point in the 58th minute when St. Edward's surrendered a penalty kick to Dallas Baptist. Lea Sedwick stepped up to take the kick but Santoy made a terrific effort to save the shot and keep St. Edward's in a 0-0 tie.
St. Edward's Head Coach Nick Cowell had high praise for Santoy after the game. "Lorrie is a rock for us. She's very consistent and is becoming a better leader each game."
From that point on, St. Edward's dominated offensively as they outshot Dallas Baptist, 5-1, including a near miss from
RIANA SOOBADOO in the 69th minute.
GRACEN JACKS nearly clinched the victory in the 86th minute, but her shot was saved by Kerry Edwards.
The first overtime only featured two shots, as both teams struggled with fatigue. Just as the game began to look as though it would be a 0-0 draw, the Hilltoppers managed to come away with a goal in the first minute of the second overtime period.
Jacks made her move and beat her defender to get outside the Dallas Baptist defense before sending a cross to the far post. Heller swooped in and volleyed the cross into the back of the net for the game winner.
Cowell said that, "DBU was tiring and we told our forwards to take their defenders 1-on-1. Jacks did a great job of beating her defender and finding Heller for the goal."
The Hilltoppers travel to Oklahoma Christian for another Heartland Conference match up on Monday. Kickoff starts at 12:00 pm in what should be another exciting contest.
