OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – St. Edwards wrapped up its longest road stand in school history on Monday afternoon with a 2-1 conference victory over Oklahoma Christian.
JACK BLANTON and
NATE COONS, both picked a good time to break into the season scoring column, recording their first goals of the season.
St. Edwards (7-2-1, 2-0 HC) pounded the net early, recording 13 first half shots, however, failing to connect on any of its early chances.
The lone goal of the period came with seconds remaining, when a hand ball was called on Oklahoma Christian inside its own box. Blanton was called upon to take the penalty kick for the Hilltoppers. Blanton rose to the occasion, giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 halftime lead.
Early into the second half, Hilltopper
NATE COONS blasted a shot from 15 yards out, finding the back of the net, and giving St. Edward's a 2-0 lead.
Oklahoma Christian (1-5-1, 0-1 HC) would not go quietly. In the 70
th minute of play, the Eagles would receive a penalty kick, which would find its way past St. Edward's goalkeeper,
KEVIN LEIB, inching Oklahoma Christian closer to the Hilltoppers with a score of 2-1.
The Eagles would challenge Leib again, as he recorded two crucial saves down the stretch for the Hilltoppers. However, Leib would let nothing past, as St. Edward's held on for the 2-1 victory and remained undefeated in conference play.
"The staff felt that in order for us to reach our highest potential, we would need to find scoring from other players, who are more than capable. Today, we did just that. Nate and Jack have both worked really hard and I'm really happy for them," head coach Brian Young stated.
St. Edward's ended its road swing with an impressive 6-0-1 record. Highlights from the road trip included victories over Texas A&M-International, West Texas A&M, and a 1-1 tie against perennial powerhouse, Midwestern State.
"Our record on the road says a great deal about the focus and discipline our players have had during the stretch. We have done well in focusing on school and soccer, and our record shows that. We are excited to get back in front of our home fans, however, need to keep the same approach at home as well," Young said.
St. Edward's will look to keep its successful season going, when they take on Newman, Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. with live video and stats available on the St. Edward's Athletic Website.
