AUSTIN, Texas—The St. Edward's basketball team defeated Colorado Mesa, 74-61, Saturday afternoon in the Recreation and Convocation Center. The victory marks the end of the Heartland-Rocky Mountain Conference Challenge in which the Hilltoppers earned a 2-0 record.

Colorado Mesa (1-1) opened the game with a 6-0 run, but St. Edward's (2-0) would not stay quiet long. Sophomore RAMIR BURTON brought the Hilltoppers even with the Mavericks, 14-14, scoring eight points that included a three-point play and St. Edward's first three-pointer of the game.

Ryan Stephan helped Colorado Mesa stay within reach of the Hilltoppers with his 12 first-half points. Going into the second, St. Edward's held a one-point advantage, 27-26.

In the first six minutes of the second half, St. Edward's went on a 17-9 run sparked by a three-pointer from senior FRANKIE MGBOLU and capped off by none other than Burton, who scored five-straight points during the stanza.

Quinton Lilly's steal and field goal opened up the largest lead of the game, 55-38, with 9:06 remaining, and forced a timeout from the visitors. The Mavericks had no answer for the St. Edward's offense, which shot 56.0 percent from the field to Colorado Mesa's 46.7 percent. The Hilltoppers outscored the visitors 47-35 in the final frame to run away with the contest.

FRANKIE MGBOLU nearly captured his first double-double on the season with 24 points and nine rebounds. He also registered three assists. TREY LINDSEY recorded 10 points and five boards.

The Hilltoppers will play again Monday Nov. 17, as they take on Southwestern at 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live video and statistics will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
