Stukes putback at buzzer wins it for Hilltoppers

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – JAMES STUKES gathered an offensive rebound with two seconds left and beat the buzzer with a layup to give St. Edward's an 84-82 victory over Newman Thursday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.
 
Down 82-80, with under a minute to play, St. Edward's (9-11, 5-7 HC) took a timeout with 51 seconds remaining. HARLEY NUSSMAN tallied a layup with 44 seconds left to tie the score for the 14th time in the contest. Newman (7-14, 4-9 HC) took a timeout and Marquis Cuyler would miss a layup. Stukes was there for the all-important rebound. After another Hilltopper timeout, RAMIR BURTON took a shot that came up short, but Stukes was there for the offensive board and game-winner.
 
In the early part of the game, both teams stayed close to one another, as there were six ties in the first 13 minutes of action. Six-straight points by the home team gave the Jets a 29-23 lead with 5:15 left in the half.
 
St. Edward's answered with a 13-2 run over the final five minutes to take a five-point lead, 36-31. A trey by Jack Pyle in the last possession cut the lead to 36-34 at the break.
 
In the second half, the Hilltoppers increased their lead to 11 points in the first five minutes. RAMIR BURTON was key, scoring seven points during the stretch to lead the way.
 
The lead would stay near double-digits until the seven-minute mark when Jeremy Espinosa's three-point play gave the Jets a 65-64 advantage. The game would stay within three points either direction the rest of the way and set the stage for Stukes.
 
Burton finished with a game-high 24 points on 6-of-14 shooting form the floor and a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Stukes ended the evening, with a double-double, collecting 22 points and 11 rebounds. Nussman narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference rival Panhandle State. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Oscar Williams Field House. Live video and stats will be available on the Aggie Athletic Website.
