Hilltoppers complete comeback and edge Chico State by one stoke to take Mustang Intercollegiate Title

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The St. Edward's women's golf team trailed Chico State by seven strokes going into the final round of play on Tuesday, but stellar play and a resilient effort propelled them to its fifth overall victory of the year with a one-stroke win over the Wildcats at the Mustang Intercollegiate.
 
"Tremendous effort today for a comeback victory," said head coach Jennifer McNeil. "I'm so proud of these girls and the fight they continue to show week in and week out."
 
HALEY HAUGHT led the way for the Hilltoppers and finished tied for the fourth spot individually. Haught posted a 73 during the final round, which was tied for the best round of the day. She finished tied with her teammate TAYLOR MORENO with a 4.75 scoring average on all par-5 holes. Haught also posted four birdies during the 36-hole event.
 
Moreno finished the tournament tied for the sixth spot individually. She completed round two with a round of 77 and a total score of 151, just one stroke behind teammate, Haught. Moreno finished tied for third with five birdies made and tied for fourth amongst the field sinking 23 pars.
 
RYANNE HADDOW matched her first round score of a 76 to finish the tournament with a combined score of 152 and in a tie for ninth place. Haddow found herself in the par-4 scoring average category with a 4.30 scoring average. She also made 22 pars during the tournament.
 
MARISSA BRANSBURG shot three strokes better than round one with a 78 during round two. She finished with a combined score of 159 and tied for 28th. ALYSSA SMITH also bettered her first round score and completed the tournament with a total score of 161 and tied for 34th.
 
St. Edward's finished in the top two in every major category at the conclusion of the tournament. The Hilltoppers tied for the lead with 109 pars made. St. Edward's was second in par-3 scoring (3.22 average), par-4 scoring (4.39 average), par-5 scoring (5.12 average), and birdies made (16).
 
McNeil closed her statement, "It feels good to pick up a win and this should be a confidence builder for them heading into the most important portion of our season."
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action April 14-15 to compete in the Doc Housewright Invitational hosted by Tarleton State. The two-day event takes place at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club in Granbury, Texas.
