Hilltoppers win Heartland Conference Championship in comeback fashion

2014 HC Women's Golf Champions
Final Results

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – It took more than the scheduled 36 holes for St. Edward's to defeat the defending Heartland Conference champions of Dallas Baptist, but the Hilltoppers topped the Patriots in a playoff round by two strokes. This is the seventh Heartland Conference championship in eight years for St. Edward's.

"I'm really proud of our girls today," said head coach Jennifer McNeil. "The girls fought back to get into the playoff and then two clutch birdies from Haley (Haught) and Ryanne (Haddow) helped solidify our team victory. This was a total team effort and every player played a huge part in our win."

Haught won the individual tournament shooting a 72 during the final round of the tournament. Although she had the same score as Kristen Pike from Dallas Baptist through 36 holes, Haught takes home the individual because she defeated Pike on the playoff hole. She finished the tournament with seven birdies and 24 pars and led the field with a 4.38 par-5 scoring average.

TAYLOR MORENO mimicked her first round score of 74 and finished with a total of 148. She completed the tournament in fifth place. Moreno led the field with 29 pars and also contributed two birdies during the 36-hole event.

MARISSA BRANSBURG finished one stroke behind Moreno in the sixth spot. She shot a 77 in the final round and had a total of 149. Bransburg made seven birdies and 19 pars during the event. She also finished even in par-5 scoring, good enough for third place amongst the field.

ALYSSA SMITH also duplicated her first score of 77 and finished with a total of 154. Smith finished in 10th. She had the lone eagle of the tournament and it came during the first round on the par-3 15th where she sank a hole in one. Smith finished the tournament with three birdies and made the top-5 in par-5 scoring.

RYANNE HADDOW improved on her first round score and completed the final round with a 76. She ended the tournament one stroke behind Smith and finished tied for 11th.  Haddow finished third with five birdies and fourth with a par-5 scoring average of 5.13.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action May 5th – 7th to take part in the NCAA West Regional hosted by Heartland Conference member Dallas Baptist. St. Edward's is the reigning NCAA West Regional Champion. The three-day event will take place at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas.
