AUSTIN, Texas – The #4 St. Edward's Women's soccer team fell to 12
th-ranked Colorado School of Mines Saturday morning by a score of 1-0 in overtime. The game was previously scheduled for Friday afternoon, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
This matchup also featured tough conditions from the soaking wet field to the light drizzle that fell from start to finish. The action started early as Colorado Mines' Rachael Turner was denied by Lorrie Santoy at the 1:34 mark. Santoy came up big again in the 34
th minute as she managed to make a diving save on Cari Smith's shot attempt.
St. Edward's (2-1) found an opportunity of its own in the 39
th minute as Jessica Traves fired off a shot that was saved by Colorado Mines' goalkeeper Jaylyn Yates. The Hilltoppers controlled the majority of the possession in the first half; however the Orediggers kept a strong defense which only allowed two shots during the period.
St. Edward's tried to build momentum early in the second half, but were denied by multiple offside traps which slowed down the attack. Jennifer Boudreau and Ally Lundquist had solid outings for the Hilltopper defense as both girls managed to block two Oredigger shots each, including two close chances in the second half.
St. Edward's had an opportunity to win the game in the 88
th minute after being awarded a free kick just outside the box. Katie Donahue's attempt sailed high over the net and both teams looked to settle the contest in overtime.
After a short intermission, Colorado School of Mines drove the ball down the right side of the field and won an early corner. Jessica Delray's cornerkick appeared to get lost in the shuffle of Hilltoppers and Orediggers that were inside the box and a scramble ensued. The ball ultimately fell to Emily Garnier who placed the ball in the back of net past a slew of defenders to secure a 1-0 victory for Colorado Mines in the 91
st minute of play.
St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday as they travel to play Texas A&M-International in a non-conference matchup. Opening kick starts at 7:00 p.m. from the Dustdevil Soccer Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Dustdevil Athletic Website.
