LAREDO, Texas - The fourth-ranked St. Edward's Hilltoppers pulled off a very rare feat in its 3-0 non-conference victory against Texas A&M-International Sunday evening at Dustdevil Field. In what was a total team effort that featured 24 different Hilltoppers playing significant minutes, at no point in the game did they allow a single shot. In head coach Nick Cowell's eight-plus seasons, this is just the fourth occurrence of holding the opposition without a shot.
Â
Texas A&M-International (2-2) allowed 10 shots through the first 45 minutes of play, but goalkeeper Chealsea Knaack came up with five first-half saves. However, Cailyn Trapani gave the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute as a Dustdevil defender lost possession of the ball near the goal and Trapani poached on it to find the back of the net.
Â
St. Edward's (3-1) continued to press the opposition in the second half and managed to win a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Megan Anderson finished off the opportunity for her first goal of the season and gave the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
Shortly after that, in the 65
th minute the Hilltoppers stole the ball away from the Dustdevils and Ari Garcia found Riana Soobadoo down the right side. Soobadoo finished the scoring chance from close range and gave St. Edward's a 3-0 victory. Soobadoo now leads the Hilltoppers with three goals on the year.
