COMMERCE, Texas – The St. Edward's women's soccer team and Texas A&M-Commerce finished a hotly contested game Friday night with the Hilltoppers coming away with a 1-0 victory on the road. This was a rematch between the two teams as they met in last year's first round of the NCAA Tournament. St. Edward's also won that matchup, 1-0.
Both teams combined for 16 shots in the first half but both goalkeepers were up to the task, especially Lorrie Santoy of St. Edward's. Santoy registered eight total saves in the first 45 minutes to help keep the game scoreless. She had an amazing streak of five saves between the 27
th and 34
th minutes, which provided the Hilltoppers with a major boost going forward.
The 18th-ranked Hilltoppers missed a number of opportunities from inside the 18-yard box due to a swarming Texas A&M-Commerce defense. Both teams traded shots to finish out the half, 0-0.
St. Edward's almost broke the tie in the 52
nd minute when Mikayla Engel fired a shot off the crossbar. The Hilltoppers continued to control the pace at the beginning of the half but Courtnie Northern saved multiple opportunities including Gracen Jacks attempt in the 64
th minute. However, Ari Garcia cleaned up the rebound from Jacks' attempt to make it 1-0.
St. Edward's added pressure on the offensive end to slow down the Lion attack. Engel, Megan Anderson and Lauren Heller all missed close opportunities in the 83
rd and 84
th minutes. However, the Hilltoppers only allowed two shots in the closing 15 minutes to clinch the 1-0 victory.
Each team registered 15 shots and Santoy turned away all eight of Commerce's shots on goal. Nick Cowell gave high praise of Santoy in saying that, "She dominated the box". Cowell also stated that their bench and a change in formation were keys to winning the game. "We changed the formation of the midfield so that the opponents didn't have as much time on the ball. The bench changed the momentum of the game at the end of the first half and into the second, especially Jacks and Duffie who played fast, physical and exerted a lot of pressure on the opponent's defense."
Cowell went on to say, "Our team is very deep and we are able to overcome any adversity we have". The Hilltoppers made it a point to win this game for Cailyn Trapani and Jordan Thinger who both missed the game due to injury.
St. Edward's moves to 4-1 on the season and will take on Texas Woman's. The game will take place Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Live coverage can be found on the Pioneer Athletic Website.
