SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – Senior midfielder, Andrew Fox, scored two first-half goals Thursday night, to lead St. Edward's past St. Mary's, 2-0, at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
St. Edward's (5-2) got off to a fast start against St. Mary's (2-3-2), pounding the net early and often. Fox had two shots early in the contest, only to be blocked by the defense. Fifteen minutes into the half, Josh Taylor would provide a beautiful touch to Fox, who finished the job with a confident shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Primo Covarrubias would provide Fox with another scoring opportunity. Beginning to find his form, Fox sent a header past the keeper for his third goal in two games to give the Hilltoppers a commanding 2-0 lead.
Fox, who scored the game-winning goal against Eastern New Mexico Monday afternoon, and was awarded the Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week Wednesday afternoon, scored the only two goals of the game to lead his team to its fourth-straight victory.
"Our team did a great job of moving the ball around the pitch and Fox did a great job of keeping himself onsides. The players and staff are happy for Fox to get back to scoring goals," head coach Brian Young said.
While St. Edward's did its job on offense, St. Edward's goalkeeper Kevin Leib and the defense did its job as well. Leib recorded his third-consecutive shutout for the Hilltoppers and earlier was awarded the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
The Hilltoppers have won four consecutive road matches and sustain their longest winning streak of the season.
"We have proven over the last few years we deal well with road matches. Our players really enjoy spending time together and it shows on the field as well," Young remarked.
The Hilltoppers will look to keep their winning streak alive as they take on Midwestern State Sunday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas. The game will start at 1 p.m. with live video and stats available of the Mustang Athletic Website.
