Hilltopper defense strong in 1-1 tie against #18 Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Trailing late in the second half, Andrew Fox scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute, tying the game at one a piece, and providing the Hilltoppers with a meaningful draw against a tough regional opponent in #18 Midwestern State, Sunday afternoon.

The defensive line for St. Edward's (5-2-1), consisting of Kyle Pujats, Ty Mobley, and Jack Blanton, displayed one of its strongest performances of the year. Constant attacking was displayed from Midwestern State (6-1-1), who before today's game had not lost nor tied on its home turf. However, Hilltopper defense and goalkeeper Kevin Leib were up to the task.

Leib recorded a season high nine saves throughout regulation and overtime, saving his team from losing a pivotal regional matchup. The trio of Pujats, Mobley, and Blanton, defended its team for all 110 minutes in today's affair and also effectively defended seven corner kicks and a total of 15 shots.

The only goal allowed by the Hilltoppers came in the 77th minute through the means of a penalty shot. Andrew Power scored his ninth goal of the season and gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead over St. Edwards as he drilled a shot past the diving Leib.

"Leib and our defenders dealt very well with all the long throwins and long balls played into our box today," head coach Brian Young stated.

The offense for the Hilltoppers found scoring opportunities scarce, as it tied a season low, three shots on goal. However, the Hilltoppers found more possession and chances after Mustang midfielder, Juan Farres was sent off the pitch for receiving a red card in the 63rd minute.

With only five minutes left to play, Fox was called upon to take a penalty shot awarded to St. Edward's. Having scored in the last three games for the Hilltoppers, the hot foot of Fox seemed like the perfect call by Young. With a large crowd of 450 strong watching, Fox confidently stuck the ball past the Mustang keeper to tie the game at one a piece.

Overtime would provide three shots for the Hilltoppers. However, none found the net and the match ended with the score level as St. Edward's walked off the field with discontent on its faces.

"The team was really disappointed with the result. It felt like a loss," Young said.

Reigning Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Daniel Riley, played in his second consecutive match for the first time this season, after being sidelined from injury. He looked to be in good form and will provide the Hilltoppers with more depth up front going forward into conference play.

The Hilltoppers are back in action Saturday, as they open up conference play against Dallas Baptist at Patriot Soccer Field. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. with live video and stats available of the Patriot Athletic Website.
