Women's Soccer Come Up Short Against Midwestern State, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas – The women's soccer team was defeated by Midwestern State by a final score of 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field. St. Edward's put together several chances attempting to tie up the game in the second half but couldn't find the elusive game-tying goal.

Midwestern State (5-0-4) scored the lone goal of the game in the 10th minute as Katy Catney sent a long ball down the left side of the field to Destinee Williamson. Williamson outran the Hilltopper defense and beat Lorrie Santoy with a shot that gave the Mustangs a 1-0 edge. Jennifer Boudreau had to leave the game as she was injured chasing after Williamson on the goal.

St. Edward's countered with consecutive shots from Viktoria Malmros and Megan Anderson, which both missed the frame. However, it was Whytneigh Duffie that had a terrific opportunity via Malmros that gave her a one-on-one with the Midwestern State goalkeeper Courtney Burnette. Burnette was up to the challenge and made a terrific play from point blank range to keep the game scoreless.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Mustangs, 6-2 in the first half and looked to push the pace again as the Mustangs played a very conservative game plan in the second half. Williamson and the Mustangs were held at bay for the rest of the match by Libby Fish and the St. Edward's defense. Fish was brought on after Boudreau's injury and led a defense that only surrendered three shots on the day.

Duffie once again found a seam through the defense that set her up with another one-on-one opportunity in the 74th minute. She rifled a shot from 10 yards out on the left side of the box but Burnette made another terrific one handed save to preserve that game.

St. Edward's lost both games this weekend despite allowing only three shots on goal to two very talented regional foes. They will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Dallas and look for revenge against Dallas Baptist. Opening kick is set for 5:00 p.m. Live coverage can be found on the Patriot Athletic Website.
