Stanton’s record night leads Hilltoppers to sweep of Tiffin

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Senior Elissa Stanton broke the St. Edward's record for highest hitting percentage in a match as she helped lead the Hilltoppers to a 3-0 sweep of Tiffin on day two of the 2014 Flint Hills Resource Nanook Classic Friday evening. St. Edward's bested the Lady Dragons, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.

Stanton pounded out 12 kills in 16 attempts for a .750 hitting percentage to beat a 12-year old record held by St. Edward's Hall of Famer Erika Figueiredo, who had a .645 hitting percentage against West Georgia during the 2002 season.

St. Edward's (2-0) trailed early in the first set, 10-8, but the Hilltoppers rallied to win five of the next six points to take a 13-11 advantage. The Dragons would make it close at 16-15, but St. Edward's closed out the match winning nine of the last 11 points for a 25-17 win.

In set two, the Hilltoppers raced out to a 7-0 lead. That would increase to 19-10 midway through the set. Tiffin rallied late to come within, 23-19, but the Hilltoppers closed it out with kills from Mary Koehler and Amy Jones.

The final set saw the Dragons take an 18-16 lead but St. Edward's was not to be denied. Led by Stanton's three-straight kills, St. Edward's won seven of the next eight points to take a commanding lead.

To go along with Stanton's 12 kills, Hannah Rauch tallied 11 kills and Koehler added 10 of her own. Koehler also had 10 digs for her first double-double of the year, while Kelly Jimenez led the defense with a team-high 14 digs. Loren Kelly dished out 24 assists and Jaclyn Billie registered 14 assists.

The Hilltoppers hit .420 as a team and combined for nine team blocks.

The Hilltoppers will close out the opening tournament on Saturday when they take on Alaska-Fairbanks at 2 p.m. CST. St. Edward's already defeated the Nanooks, 3-0 on the tournament's opening night.  Live video and stats will be available on the Nanook Website.
