St. Edward’s rolls in 4-0 rout of UC-Colorado Springs

AUSTIN, Texas – The fifth-ranked St. Edward's women's soccer team improved its record to 2-0 after a 4-0 victory over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

St. Edward's started the scoring in the fourth minute as Riana Soobadoo received a touch pass from Lauren Heller to set her up with a one-on-one situation with the Mountain Lion goalkeeper. She put a nice hesitation move on the goalkeeper and beat her far post from 10 yards out to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0.

Soobadoo found the back of the net again in the 25th minute in nearly identical fashion as Megan Anderson placed a pass through the defense for another one-on-one. Once again, she placed the shot far post and beat the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.

After halftime, both teams battled for possession until the 57th minute where the Hilltoppers capitalized on a turnover on the UC-Colorado Springs side of the field. Ari Garcia fired a shot towards the right side of the goal forcing the keeper to dive. However, her shot deflected off of Heller's shoulder and bounced into the goal to give the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead.

St. Edward's closed out the scoring in the 74th minute after Gracen Jacks fired in a cross after beating her defender on the left side. Cailyn Trapani swooped in across the box and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to finish off the scoring for the Hilltoppers.

Despite the 28 shots taken by St. Edward's, Head Coach Nick Cowell was very impressed with the way his defense played as they only allowed one shot on goal for the entire game.

"We did a good job of keeping pressure on them with our forwards and midfielders, which helped keep our defense organized and not get split up," Cowell said. "I thought Jennifer Boudreau did well and Victoria Malmros has really come along as a freshman. Katie Donahue continues to consistently play at a high level."

The Hilltoppers will be back in action when they host Colorado School of Mines Friday, September 12th at 4:00 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
