Final ResultsWICHITA, Kan. – St. Edward's junior
ELIOTT AZOULAY shot an even-par 72 in the final round to take home medalist honors at the Newman Fall Invitational. St. Edward's was on fire as a team as it tied for the lowest round of the day with a 284 to move up to second place.
Azoulay (75-70-72=217) opened the day with a one-shot lead over two players. He would better his competitors in the final round and held off a charge from some late challengers. He bested TAMU-Commerce's Garrett Landers (74-72-73=219) by two strokes and Hutchinson CC's Chase Coble (74-73-73=220) by three.
"I am very happy for Eliott," St. Edward's Head Coach Todd Ohlmeyer said. "He was close last week, and to follow it up with another solid performance was outstanding."
Junior
THOMAS HOLTZMAN (84-72-68=224) used four birdies on his final four holes to finish four-under par in the final round. His 68 tied for low round of the day, and moved him up 15 spots to tie for 11
th place.
DILLON VAN ESSEN (80-73-74=227) and
ANDREW SPEAR (76-79-72=227) both tied for 15
th place, while
JOEY HEARN (86-80-72=238) moved up 15 spots to tie for 34
th place.
St. Edward's (315-294-284=893) trailed clubhouse leader Southern Nazarene (297-296-305=898) by 16 strokes heading into the final round and they delivered by outplaying them by 21 shots in round three. The only problem was that Dallas Baptist (295-306-284=885) equaled the Hilltoppers team score of four-under par to take home the championship. The Hilltoppers also defeated Heartland Conference foes Newman, Rogers State and UA Fort Smith.
"Of course this finish reinforces what we learned yesterday in that we can't dig ourselves such a deep hole at the start," Ohlmeyer said. "However, I am extremely proud of the way the guys battled back. Dallas Baptist played a solid tournament."
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Monday when they travel to take part in the Midwestern State Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas.
