Covarubbias’ two goals lead #13 St. Edward’s past Dallas Baptist, 2-0

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's sophomore midfielder PABLO COVARRUBIAS is on fire right now with game-winning goals in his last two matches, including both goals in a 2-0 Hilltopper defeat of Dallas Baptist Wednesday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

St. Edward's (9-1-2, 4-0 HC) started the game putting pressure on Dallas Baptist (5-6-1, 2-2 HC) in the first 25 minutes. The Hilltoppers sent four shots towards goal and had five cornerkicks during that time but nothing to show for it. Finally in the 28th minute, Covarubbias gathered a loose ball just outside the box and let fire a low line drive. The ball found the net through a crowd far post to put St. Edward's in front, 1-0. That is how the first half would end, with St. Edward's controlling the play by outshooting the Patriots, 10-1.

In the second half, Dallas Baptist hung tight with the Hilltoppers for the first 35 minutes. Covarrubias put the game on ice in the 84th minute with his second goal of the match. JOSH TAYLOR made an excellent run down the left side of the field and cut the ball back to Covarrubias. The midfielder pounced on the ball and sent a shot far post from 15 yards away. The ball clanked off the right post and in for his sixth tally of the season.

For the match, St. Edward's outshot Dallas Baptist, 17-2. They also placed seven shots on goal compared to just one for the Patriots.

St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they host West Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website. West Texas A&M leads the series 12-4, but it was the Hilltoppers who blasted the Buffs, 4-0 last season in Canyon, Texas. It was the worst home loss for West Texas A&M in school history.
