GEORGETOWN, Texas – St. Edward's University Men's and Women's Cross Country continued its storybook first season as the men cruised to a first-place finish and the women finished second at the Southwestern University Invitational on Friday evening at Berry Springs Park.
 
GABRIEL MONTICURE and NICHOLAS BARRETT paced the men's team, crossing the finish line third and fourth, respectively, while ALEXANDRA VILLAFRANCA led the women, finishing 11^th in 22:07.5. Monticure finished the 5000-meter race in a time of 17:34.0 while Barrett clocked in at 17:45.0. Friday's race marks the second top finish of the season for the men and the third top-three finish for the women.
 
"It was great for the men to get first in the team standings. Both of our teams had some people step up despite the hot conditions," said head coach David Chandler. "The team chemistry has been fantastic this first season on both sides. I look forward to bringing that momentum into conference this next weekend."

In addition to Monticure's and Barrett's top-five finishes in the men's race, HOGAN DAUGHTERS powered to a seventh-place finish to give St. Edward's three individuals in the top-10. NICK LEITGEB broke the plane in 11^th with NICHOLAS DIPAOLO on his heels in 12^th. NICOLAS ZUNIGA and EVAN HERRING both finished in the top-20 while William Tanner capped off the championship finish in 24^th.
 
On the women's side the Hilltoppers ran as a pack with ANNA DAVIES, MELISSA POLLO, and ANDI THEIS finishing right behind Villafranca in sequence, 12^th, 13^th, and 14^th. SHAWNTEL GOFF powered her way into the top-20, finishing 17^th with JORDAN BROWN and MAGGIE KAPROSCH rounding out St. Edward's top seven, crossing 20^th and 21^st, respectively.
 
Friday's action serves as a tune-up for the Hilltoppers as they next head to the Heartland Conference Championships on Saturday, October 24 in Laredo, Texas. The conference meet will serve as the first time this season that all league members have raced in the same competition.
