AUSTIN, Texas – The 25th-ranked St. Edward's Women's Soccer team battled the rain and UT-Permian Basin Thursday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field and came away with a 2-0 victory against the Falcons to keep its Heartland Conference title hopes alive.
St. Edward's (10-3, 4-1 HC) dominated possession the entire match. They peppered the Falcon goalkeeper Ebony Campbell with 27 shots, 16 in the first half alone. Twelve of those shots were on goal, and Campbell was only able to make 10 saves.
ELIN ROSENBERG CEMAZAR bested the Falcons in the 35
th minute, when she got a through ball from
VIKTORIA MALMROS and blasted a shot far post for the first goal of the contest. That is how the half ended.
In the second half,
WHYTNEIGH DUFFIE made a run into the box in the 62
nd minute and was taken down. Senior defender
KATIE DONAHUE converted the penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Falcons, 27-2, and had 12 cornerkicks compared to zero for UT-Permian Basin.
"I thought we had a good performance today and everyone got to play," head coach Nick Cowell said. "Our substitutes come into the game with the mindset to be game changers. Today, they earned the win for us. We wanted to get our outside backs forward with overlapping runs and that got us the first goal."
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they host Lubbock Christian. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live coverage can be found on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
