#22 St. Edward’s stunned by Texas A&M-International, 2-1

AUSTIN, Texas – The 22nd-ranked St. Edward's Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Heartland Conference foe Texas A&M-International Thursday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

St. Edward's controlled the first half, outshooting TAMU-International, 8-3. In the first 30 minutes, however, neither team could get off any shots. With the Dustdevils controlling the ball in the Hilltopper penalty box, St. Edward's committed a foul to give the visitors a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Kim Garcia put the penalty shot in for a 1-0 Dustdevil lead.

For the rest of the first half, St. Edward's played aggressive on the offensive end, tallying seven shots in the last 15 minutes. The half would end with the Hilltoppers trailing 1-0.

In the second half, a long play ahead by Daisy Perez in the 51st minute pulled Hilltopper goalkeeper LORRIE SANTOY out of her box. Garcia was able to get to the ball first and chipped it over the keeper. The shot bounced and hit the crossbar, then went in for a 2-0 lead.

St. Edward's then went on the offensive once again. In the 58th minute, JENNIFER BOUDREAU's shot hit the crossbar. Finally in the 72nd minute, the Hilltoppers got one of the goals back. GRACEN JACKS made a run down the left side all the way from midfield. Jacks played a ball to the penalty spot where TAYLOR SETTECERRI was waiting. She gathered the ball and sent a shot off the far-post and in.

The Hilltoppers had three more shots in the final 20 minutes, but none could find the back of the net as TAMU-International pulled off the biggest upset of the season in the Heartland Conference.

St. Edward's outshot the Dustdevils, 16-5, and had 12 cornerkicks to zero for the visitors.

St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday as they host long-time rival St. Mary's. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
