Full Game NotesGOING STREAKINGSt. Edward's has not been on the losing side of a match since West Texas A&M got the better of them on Oct. 17th. Since then, the Hilltoppers have won their last six matches and have outscored their opponents, 16-2.
HEARTLAND CONFERENCE DOMINANCEThe Hilltoppers managed their second-straight perfect 8-0 record in the Heartland Conference regular season, obtaining only the second-ever undefeated record in the history of the league. Not only was St. Edward's regular season champions, but they also took the Heartland Conference Tournament championship as well. Five Hilltoppers were named to this year's Heartland Conference First Team. Those selected included forward
PABLO COVARRUBIAS, midfielder
JOSH TAYLOR, defenders
OWAIN HOSKINS and
KYLE PUJATS, and goalkeeper
KEVIN LEIB. Forward
DYLAN ARMSTRONG and midfielder
JACK BLANTON, were also recognized for their contributions, as they were selected to the All-Heartland Men's Soccer Second Team.
LET'S KEEP PLAYINGAfter making the NCAA Postseason in 2014 for the first time in 15 years, the Hilltoppers have now made it back-to-back in postseason berths.
WELCOME TO THE HILLTOPDYLAN ARMSTRONG has been an outstanding addition to this year's Heartland Conference Champions. The Newcastle, England native tied for the Heartland Conference lead in points with fellow Hilltopper
PABLO COVARRUBIAS at 23. He tallied eight goals and seven assists on his way to being named Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPSThe St. Edward's defense has been world class all year long. Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
OWAIN HOSKINS has led the effort, allowing the fewest goals (8) in the nation and a 0.40 goals-against average. The team has allowed only 71 shots on goal.
LEIB IT TO MEWhen shots are surrendered, Leib has been a stone wall in the net. The goalkeeper was selected to the Heartland Conference First Team, and has produced the most shutouts (9) in the conference. His goals against average of 0.34 and save percentage (.900) are tops in the nation.
BACK TO BACK TO BACK TO BACKHead Coach Brian Young has won his fourth-consecutive Heartland Conference Coach of the Year award. In the midst of his 12th season as head coach, Young has hit 100 wins, and currently sits second all-time in St. Edward's history with 118 victories. Young also holds the highest winning percentage by a Hilltopper Men's Soccer coach with a .590 mark.
ESTABLISHING A TRADITION OF SUCCESSYoung's program has now won four-consecutive Heartland Conference regular season championships. Over the last four seasons, the Hilltoppers have lost only 11 games, and won 55. The reputation of the program is evolving as a dominant one and the expectations of the St. Edward's Men's Soccer team is trending upwards.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULEAccording to the NCAA, St. Edward's has played the third toughest schedule in the nation to date. The combined overall record of Hilltopper opponents for 2015 is 132-87-19 for a .595 winning percentage. Only Flagler and Lindenwood have played a tougher schedule, and both of those programs were not selected for the NCAA Tourney.
