Women’s Basketball finishes strong despite 80-51 loss to NCAA Division I UT-San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's Women's Basketball team outscored NCAA Division I UT-San Antonio, 19-18, in the fourth quarter but fell to the Roadrunners, 81-50, Sunday evening in exhibition play at the Convocation Center.
 
UTSA raced out to an 8-4 lead in the game's first five minutes of action. CARISSA DIAZ and KHIANI CLARK each had buckets in the early going. The Roadrunners used the second half of the first quarter to go on a 16-2 run that saw the Hilltoppers turn the ball over seven times.
 
In the second quarter, UTSA extended its lead to 27 points as the home team shot 45 percent from the floor and held the Hilltoppers to 21 percent shooting.
 
In the second half, things started to turn around for St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers got five points from MILEKA LOYDRAKE as the visitors held steady with just a 20-15 deficit in the third quarter.
 
The fourth quarter saw St. Edward's outscore the Roadrunners by one. Diaz had four points, while freshman ALEX BOX came off of the bench to tally six points.
 
St. Edward's was held to just 34 percent shooting, but held its own in rebounding. The Roadrunners only outrebounded the Hilltoppers, 41-39.
 
St. Edward's will open up regular season play Friday when they host Southwestern Christian. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Hilltoppers are a perfect 3-0 in home openers under the direction of J.J. Riehl. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
