Game 1 Box ScoreGame 2 Box ScoreCANYON, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team did something that only four teams have been able to do in the past three seasons, and that is defeat West Texas A&M in Canyon. The Lady Buffs are a combined 66-7 in their last three seasons at Schaeffer Park and the Hilltoppers have two road wins during that span against West Texas A&M. On Friday evening on the first day of the Lady Buff Invite, St. Edward's took the opening game, 7-5, over the nation's number one team and defending national champion. The Lady Buffs rallied to win game two, 11-3.
Schaeffer Park was also the site of the 2013 NCAA South Central Regional where St. Edward's upset the Lady Buffs in the first round on its way to winning the regional.
Game 1In the opening game, St. Edward's (9-6) jumped on West Texas A&M (11-2) early, pushing across six runs in the second inning off of Lady Buff All-American pitcher Rita Hokianga.
MORGAN DUFOUR started the rally with a one-out single to right field.
KP PERCH followed with a single to the gap in left field. After a hit-by-pitch against
EMILY MAYFIELD loaded the bases,
CYDNEY ERVIN singled home Dufour with the game's first run. With two outs,
ALEX MAYFIELD forced in a run with a hit by a pitch to score Perch.
KACI OLSON drove in two runs with her single up the middle to make it 4-0.
FAITH ROBERTS capped off the scoring with a two-RBI double to make it 6-0.
West Texas A&M would get single runs in both the third and fourth innings to shave the lead to 6-2, however St. Edward's got a run back in the sixth inning.
ALEX MAYFIELD led off the inning with a single and stole second. She would score on a groundout from
CAITIE CARNEY to push the lead to 7-2.
The Lady Buffs tried to rally in the seventh inning with a two-run home run from Rene Erwin and a solo shot by Allie Cranfill to make it 7-5, but that is where it would end as the Hilltoppers knocked off the top team in NCAA Division II.
Game 2In the second game, St. Edward's again jumped to the early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Carney drove in
ALEX MAYFIELD on a squeeze bunt for a quick 1-0 lead. Dufour drove in the second run with a single to center field.
West Texas A&M, who hadn't lost two games in a row at home during the last three seasons was on the ropes. In the bottom of the first inning, West Texas A&M loaded the bases with one out. Lacey Taylor smacked a pitch over the outfield wall in right for a grand slam to put the Lady Buffs up, 4-2.
West Texas A&M tacked on two unearned runs in the third inning before St. Edward's got back on the board. Olson drove in
BREAH WHITTEN to cut the lead to 6-3.
The Lady Buffs scored two runs in the fourth inning and put the game out of reach with three unearned runs in the fifth inning for the final 11-3 margin.
Both Dufour and
FAITH ROBERTS led the Hilltoppers at the plate, with each going 4-for-7 in the box.
ALEX MAYFIELD tallied a hit in each game to run her hitting streak to 13 games.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they take on Eastern New Mexico on day two of the Lady Buff Invite. The doubleheader against the Zias will begin at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available on the West Texas A&M Athletic Website.
