Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. – St. Edward's University Volleyball dropped a pair of five-set matches on day two of the Steel and Silver Volleyball Classic. However, a lineup reshuffled by injury showed promise for the Hilltoppers.
MIKAYLA GRILL took over as top attacker for St. Edward's, collecting a team-high 34 kills over two matches while
KATIE MARTIN moved to libero in game two and led the team in digs with 24. Also, in her collegiate debut as a hitter,
MORGAN BECKHAM registered 13 kills and hit .600.
"I am extremely proud of the fight in this group," said head coach Mary DeJute. "There was a focused group working together and having fun playing a sport they love. Again, it's a process and they took another step by overcoming so much adversity today."
Game one of the day saw the Hilltoppers jump to a one set lead over Eastern New Mexico as they took the opening game 25-20. However, 25-14 and 25-9 losses forced St. Edward's to win game four 25-23 to extend the match. In the deciding set it was Eastern New Mexico coming out on top, 15-11.
In game two against the hosting ThunderWolves of Colorado State-Pueblo, the Toppers pushed game one to extra points, but fell 28-26. Coach DeJute led her team to a convincing 25-16 victory in game two, but came up short in game three, 25-21. In another must-win situation, the Hilltoppers took game four 25-18 but could not pull out the win, falling 15-13 in game five.
St. Edward's wraps up its road trip on Saturday, traveling back to Colorado Springs, Colorado to take on Adams State at 11:30 a.m. (MST). Live stat and video links can be found at GoHilltoppers.com.
