Final ResultsDENVER, Colo. – The St. Edward's Men's Golf improved on its previous round once again Tuesday in the DII National Preview at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Playing on the same course where this year's DII National Championship will take place, the Hilltoppers were three shots better than their round two score to move up to a tie for 12
th place.
St. Edward's (296-295-292=883) shot five strokes better in the final round than its rival St. Mary's (293-293-297=883) to tie the Rattlers for 12
th place. The key to the improvement was its play on par-5 holes. The Hilltoppers had six birdies as a team on the four holes that were par-5. They would finish sixth in the tournament, playing the par-5 holes at three-under par.
"From a positive standpoint, we improved each round," Head Coach Todd Ohlmeyer said. "This was a strong field, and while the finish wasn't what we were looking for, it was a good start to the season. The team is anxious to get back at it next week."
Chico State (278-281-285=844) ran away with the team title as they bested both Barry (289-278-290=857) and Nova Southeastern (292-283-282=857) by 13 shots.
Junior
THOMAS HOLTZMAN (76-74-71=221) fired the only round under par for the Hilltoppers in the tournament as the junior carded three birdies on the day. He finished tied for 39
th place.
Just like the team,
JOEY HEARN (75-74-73=222) improved in each round of the tournament. He had three birdies during the final round to give him 11 for the tournament to lead the team and tie him for 49
th place, individually in the tourney.
Even though his putts were not falling,
DILLON VAN ESSEN (73-74-76=223) consistent play netted him 39 pars, which was good enough to tie for second in that category. Van Essen tied for 54
th place.
Also competing for the Hilltoppers were
ANDREW SPEAR (72-79-74=225) and
JAY HOGAN (80-73-74=227) who tied for 66
th and 72
nd place, respectively.
Chico State's Alistair Docherty (69-69-69=207) won the individual title at nine-under par, while four players tied for second place at seven-under par.
St. Edward's will be back in action Monday when they travel to take part in the NCAA Regional Preview hosted by Western New Mexico. The two-day 54-hole tournament will take place at The University Golf Club in Las Cruces, N.M. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com
