AUSTIN, Texas – The ninth-ranked St. Edward's Men's Soccer team continued its hot scoring on Sunday as it blasted Eastern New Mexico, 8-0, at Lewis-Chen Family Field. In their last three matches, the Hilltoppers have outscored the opposition, 22-0. For the entire season, St. Edward's holds a 25-1 goal advantage.
St. Edward's (4-0-2) had a hard time finding the back of the net in the first 30 minutes of action, but things started to heat up for the offense in the 35
th minute.
PABLO COVARRUBIAS intercepted a clearance by the Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper and then sent a shot over the keeper as he was backpedaling. The ball found the back of the net.
Covarrubias had his hand in the second goal as well. In the 37
th minute, he sent a free kick in the box that found the head of
OWAIN HOSKINS. Hoskins' header found
RYAN DENDINGER for the tap-in goal.
STEVE AOUDOU created the third goal of the match in the 38
th minute when he drove inside the box and was taken down by a Greyhound defender.
JACK BLANTON blasted the penalty kick in the goal for a 3-0 lead.
Covarrubias capped off the scoring in the first half with his goal with just 56 seconds remaining before halftime.
DYLAN ARMSTRONG had the assist on the play.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers kept pouring it on.
JACK BLANTON notched his second penalty kick goal of the game in the 50
th minute.
JULIAN SANCHEZ, Aoudou and
TIM LAGRIMAS all added goals down the stretch.
St. Edward's outshot Eastern New Mexico, 18-1, and had nine cornerkicks compared to just one for the Greyhounds.
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Oklahoma Christian in their Heartland Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Eagle Soccer Field. Live coverage can be found on the Eagle Athletic Website.
