AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore
INDIA WENTZ's goal in the 68th minute led the No. 14-ranked St. Edward's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Newman on Thursday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
The victory was the fifth in a row for St. Edward's (9-1-1, 8-0-1 HC) who keeps its four-point lead in the race for the Heartland Conference regular season title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 68th minute, junior KATIE KING ripped a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Jets defender. With the ball rolling towards the goal, Wentz redirected it past the goalkeeper for the lone goal of the match.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- The five-match winning streak is the longest of the season.
- St. Edward's has been absolutely dominant in the series history, upping its advantage to 18-1-2. It has also won the last nine meetings against Newman.
- With her goal Thursday, Wentz is now third on the team with three goals scored.

"I think today was just one of those typical Thursday afternoon games. Kids show up after their classes with little time to focus on the game during the day.
"Newman is a very strong team who lets very few goals in. We just had to gut it out today. Sometimes you play beautiful soccer, but other times you just have to fight your way through."

Rogers State is the only team in the Heartland Conference to gain a point off St. Edward's this season. Earlier this season in Claremore, Okla., the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie.
