St. Edward’s Inches Closer to Heartland Title

Hilltoppers blitz Oklahoma Christian, 3-1

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – With a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Christian Thursday evening, the St. Edward's women's soccer team is just one positive result away from clinching the Heartland Conference Regular Season crown.

The victory is the seventh in a row for St. Edward's (11-1-1, 10-0-1 HC), who increases its lead to eight points in the Heartland Conference standings. There are three regular season matches left.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hilltoppers started strong, hitting the crossbar in the fifth minute.
  • In the 16th minute, junior WHYTNEIGH DUFFIE notched her fourth goal of the season with a volley from 18 yards out.
  • In the 35th minute, sophomore SABRINA CONE made it 2-0 with a header off of a Hilltopper cornerkick. MACKENZIE CHERNIUK tallied the assist.
  • Freshman TONI TEWES put the game away in the 56th minute with a steal and a 20-yard volley into the net for a 3-0 lead.
  • Oklahoma Christian got a goal back in the 69th minute when Jen Atherton headed the ball in, cutting the Hilltopper lead to 3-1.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers' seven-match winning streak is the longest of the season.
  • St. Edward's has been absolutely dominant in the series history, upping its advantage to 7-1. It has also won the last seven meetings against Oklahoma Christian.
  • Tewes and Duffie both moved into a tie for third place on the team with four goals.
  • The cornerkick goal was the fifth of the season for St. Edward's.
  • A tie on Saturday against Lubbock Christian clinches a share of the conference title. A win by the Hilltoppers will give them the outright title.
QUOTEBOARD: HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
"We started the game very well, and scored some nice goals in the first half. We also started the second half well, and were in control of the match. A couple of lapses in concentration in the second half led to our opponent putting some pressure on us, but we weathered the storm and came off victorious. We won't let 10 minutes of madness spoil the other 80 minutes of good soccer."

UP NEXT
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday at noon when they travel to face Lubbock Christian. Live video and stats will be available at www.GoHilltoppers.com.
