Golden Goal Clinches Heartland Title for Hilltoppers

India Wentz scores 2:17 into first overtime

LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman INDIA WENTZ scored 2:17 into the first overtime Saturday as St. Edward's escaped with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Lubbock Christian. The victory clinches the Heartland Conference Regular Season Championship for the Hilltoppers.

The victory is the eighth in a row for St. Edward's (12-1-1, 11-0-1 HC) as it also clinches hosting duties Nov. 3-5 for the Heartland Conference Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hilltoppers responded immediately when junior KELLY ANDRUS followed up an initial shot in the 58th minute by senior JENNIFER BOUDREAU and scored her sixth goal of the season.
  • Hilltopper senior goalkeeper LORRIE SANTOY kept the game tied by saving a penalty kick in the 60th minute.
  • In overtime it was all St. Edward's. The visitors tallied a cornerkick and a shot in the first minute of action.
  • Wentz registered the golden goal just over a minute later to give the Hilltoppers the regular season title.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers' eight-match winning streak is the longest of the season.
  • St. Edward's has owned the series against Lubbock Christian, winning all six matchups with the Lady Chaps.
  • The 1-0 deficit was the first time St. Edward's has trailed in 10 matches.
  • The six saves by Santoy was a season high for the Hilltopper net minder.
  • This was the first overtime win for St. Edward's this season. The last overtime win for the Hilltoppers came in 2014.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
"It was good to see how our team would respond to some adversity on the field. Lubbock Christian is a very talented team. For our team to respond so quickly to their goal with an equalizer, and then get the game-winner in overtime, was very inspirational for me as a coach."
