Offensive Outburst Brings Senior Day Victory

Hilltoppers explode for 6-0 win over Texas A&M-International

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's women's soccer team celebrated senior day Thursday with an impressive 6-0 victory over Texas A&M-International.

The victory is the ninth in a row for St. Edward's (13-1-1, 12-0-1 HC) as five seniors were honored before the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 30 minutes of action saw St. Edward's attack the Dustdevil goal but come up empty. The Hilltoppers sent five shots on goal but none found the mark.
  • Freshman INDIA WENTZ finally broke into the scoring column with a goal in the 32nd minute.
  • Wentz also had a hand in the second goal of the game, assisting on a goal by sophomore MORGAN PALMER in the 38th minute.
  • In the second half, St. Edward's didn't let up. The home team tallied four goals down the stretch, with two of them coming off of cornerkicks.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers' nine-match winning streak is the longest of the season.
  • St. Edward's has owned the series with TAMU-International with a 22-1 record. The Hilltoppers have won two straight matchups.
  • The six goals scored by St. Edward's were the most of the 2016 season.
  • St. Edward's registered a season-high 14 cornerkicks compared to zero for the visitors.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
"We always strive to get a shutout. Not allowing the other team a chance to score gives you a better chance of winning. I thought the first 30 minutes we didn't give any solutions to what they were doing defensively. In the second half we started to spread the ball out more, which created more space for our forwards to operate."

Thoughts on his five seniors:
"Our five seniors have given so much to the program. They are competitive, good leaders and great people. The second half performance showed our seniors how much we care about them."

UP NEXT
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday when they host rival St. Mary's at 1 p.m. on Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available at www.GoHilltoppers.com.
