Offense Explodes in Battle of the Saints Blowout

St. Edward’s sweeps season series with St. Mary’s

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's women's soccer team turned a close game early into a 4-1 blowout Saturday against longtime rival St. Mary's at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

The Hilltoppers (14-1-1, 13-0-1 HC) close out the regular season with their 10th straight victory. With the win, St. Edward's completed a regular-season Battle of the Saints series sweep of St. Mary's.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Edward's wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the third minute, junior WHYTNEIGH DUFFIE pounced on a rebound off the Rattler goalkeeper and put it home for a 1-0 Hilltopper lead.
  • St. Mary's responded in the ninth minute when Roxy Cruz Santory scored on a shot just over the head of Hilltopper goalkeeper LORRIE SANTOY.
  • St. Edward's put two more in the goal before halftime as freshmen TONI TEWES and SYDNEY MACK each picked up their fifth goal of the season.
  • Just after halftime, junior KELLY ANDRUS made it 4-1 with a breakaway goal in the 49th minute to cap off the scoring.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • The Hilltoppers' 10-match winning streak is the longest of the season.
  • St. Edward's increases its lead in the series history to 30-22-5. The Hilltoppers have won 12 straight meetings.
  • The Hilltoppers have six players with at least five goals each.
  • St. Edward's outshot the Rattlers, 26-1. Over the last two matches, the Hilltoppers own a 53-3 shot advantage.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
"The early goal we let up was sloppy play by us. We were able to deal with that adversity and come back in the game. We have had a great regular season, but I think that our team is now focused on the postseason."
