SAN ANTONIO, Texas – JAY HOGAN and ANDREW SPEAR both carded birdies on their final hole to help the St. Edward's Men's Golf team finish second at the 2016 Rattler Invite. The tournament was held at the Par 72, 7,121-yard Golf Club of Texas in southwest San Antonio.

Leading rival St. Mary's by the slimmest of margins going into the last few holes, Spear (74-76-71=221) stepped up his game, as the freshman drained a birdie putt on the third hole (his last). That birdie was one of six on the round for the Flower Mound, Texas native. He jumped up 12 places on the final day to finish tied for 26th.

Hogan (73-71-73=217) also birdied on the par-5 18th hole to clinch second place for the Hilltoppers. Hogan was the highest finisher for St. Edward's, ending tied for seventh. The top-10 finish was the first of the season and third of his career.

"This was a good tournament for us. We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish by beating a bunch of teams in our region," head coach Todd Ohlmeyer said. "In the spring season we have put ourselves into good position heading into the final day. This is the first time we have held or moved up."

St. Edward's (290-291-289=870) came into the final round tied for second place with both St. Mary's (286-295-291=872) and Concordia (295-286-294=875). The Hilltoppers shot the lowest round of any team on Tuesday to distance themselves from their regional competitors. Junior-college heavyweight Indian Hills CC (279-282-290=851) ran away with the title at 13-under par as a team.

Also competing for St. Edward's were JOEY HEARN (71-74-74=219), DILLON VAN ESSEN (73-75-71=219), and ELIOTT AZOULAY (73-71-75=219). All three players tied for 15th place. Showing their depth, the Hilltoppers did what no other team could do. They had all five players finish in the top-26 or better.

"Hopefully this tournament gives us some confidence heading down the final stretch of the regular season," Ohlmeyer said. "It is good that we are trending up as we head towards postseason play."

St. Edward's will be back in action March 28-29 when they host the St. Edward's Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event will take place at Onion Creek Country Club in South Austin. Live stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
