Hilltoppers rebound with 3-1 victory over Newman

GAME INFORMATION
Score: St. Edward's 3, Newman 1
Records: St. Edward's (5-1-1, 4-0-1 HC), Rogers State (3-3-3, 2-2-1 HC)
Location: Wilkins Field – Wichita, Kan.
Attendance: 97

TURNING POINT
-St. Edward's wasted little time putting pressure on the Newman goal as they rattled off four shots in the first 15 minutes of play. In the 20th minute, the Hilltoppers struck pay dirt. Senior SYDNEY CARROLL sent a cross into the box, which found the head of freshman INDIA WENTZ. The forward connected and gave the Hilltoppers a 1-0 advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After the early goal, St. Edward's looked as if its offense was going to have trouble finishing as they did in a 1-1 tie at Rogers State on Thursday.
-In the second half, freshman ASHLEY VALSIN-LUU made sure that would not be the case. Fellow freshman JENNA LIPSCOMB sent a cornerkick into the box, which Valsin-Luu headed past the Jet keeper for a 2-0 lead.
-In the 61st minute, junior KELLY ANDRUS kept her hot streak going as she got a quick pass from senior JENNIFER BOUDREAU inside the box. The forward headed it home for a 3-0 Hilltopper lead.
-A late foul inside the Hilltopper penalty box gave Newman a penalty kick which Erin Mink converted to reduce the lead to 3-1, with 12 minutes to go.

HILLTOPPER NOTES
-St. Edward's outshot the Jets, 14-4, and had seven cornerkicks compared to none for Newman.
-Andrus' goal makes it four-straight games with a goal. She is second on the team with four goals, just one behind Boudreau, who has five.
-The victory increases the Hilltopper dominance in the series to the tune of a 17-1-2 advantage over the Jets. St. Edward's has now won eight-straight contests against Newman.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH NICK COWELL
"Today we played a strong Newman team who had outshot all of its conference opponents so far. Our defensive pressure in the first half was as intense as we have played this season. Offensively, we took advantage of our ability in the air to score three headers. Overall, a strong performance heading into the Battle of the Saints matchup on Thursday.

UP NEXT
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on longtime rival St. Mary's in this year's edition of "Battle of the Saints".
