SAN ANGELO, Texas – St. Edward's moved to 4-0 Friday with a 107-85 win over Paul Quinn College (1-2) at Angelo State's Junell Center. Landon Goesling scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the first half to lead the Hilltoppers.
In a physical game that saw 75 combined free throws and 60 personal fouls, both teams were efficient at the line, but from the floor, SEU had the advantage, and it was the difference in the contest. St. Edward's shot 52.2 percent from the floor compared to Paul Quinn's 42.9 and had more of an edge in the paint scoring 42 points compared to the Tigers' 30.
Dorian Lopez had his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Corey McKendree scored 16 points and Sean Watkins added 10 while dishing out seven assists and grabbing three steals. The Hilltoppers coasted to 4-0 for the 13th time in program history and the fifth time in the last nine seasons under head coach Andre Cook.
Although the Hilltoppers had a nine-point lead at half, SEU made things more comfortable in the second, shooting 63.6 percent from the floor (21-33) and held the Tigers to just eight second-half field goals.
HIGHLIGHTS
• For the third time in four games Landon Goesling set a career-high in points, this time with 27 thanks to his ability to get to the free-throw line and convert; Goesling was 16 of 19 from the free-throw line.
• Goesling's 16 free-throws made were tied for third most in school history (John Wells, 16, vs. St. Mary's 2/15/69), and his 19 attempts were second most.
• Goesling has 12 career games with double-digit points and double-digits in each of SEU's four games this season.
• Dorian Lopez collected his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
• Lopez's 12 boards tied a career high; he had a dozen last season when he played for Oklahoma Christian vs. OPSU (1/28/17).
• It was Lopez's 17th career game with double-digit points and third this season.
• Lopez now has four career games with double-digit rebounds, and one this season.
• Sean Watkins' 10 points gave him an even 500 for his career.
• Watkins' three steals moved him into 10th place all-time on SEU's career steals list with 98.
• Watkins was one assist shy of his career-high and had just one turnover.
• Cory McKendree's 16 points gives him nine career games with double-digit points and three this season.
• Mark Paterson scored a career-high nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
• Head Coach Andre Cook collected his 240th career victory as a collegiate head coach Friday.
