St. Edward’s falls to Angelo State, 79-60

PUEBLO, Colo. – St. Edward's women's basketball saw its record-setting season come to a close Friday with a 79-60 loss to Angelo State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Senior SHAKERA BARNES closed her career by leading all scorers with 28 points. She also dished out three assists and grabbed six rebounds. Senior LEXI FATHEREE also scored in double digits with 16 points while KHIANI CLARK ended her illustrious career with six rebounds, three assists, a block, a steal, and four points.

St. Edward's (20-9) surpassed numerous milestones, including most Heartland Conference wins in a single season, and its first sweep of the conference regular-season and conference titles. Angelo State (25-5) advances to the regional semifinals for the second straight season.

  • Angelo State held the Hilltoppers to 23-percent shooting from the field in the second quarter to take a 48-22 lead at halftime.
  • St. Edward's doubled its score with 22 points in the third quarter.
  • The Hilltoppers outscored the RamBelles in the final period, 16-14, but it would not be enough.

  • As a team, SEU broke the program record for 3-pointers made and 3-pointers attempted in a single season.
  • Barnes broke the program record for career assists per game with 5.1 over her two-year tenure.
  • Fatheree broke the program record for career 3-point field goal percentage (.390), formerly held by Coach Riehl.

QUOTE BOARD: HEAD COACH J.J. RIEHL
"Angelo State is a really good team, and they shot really well. We knew we had to make their life difficult offensively, and they just got too many easy looks. I thought we did a great job in the second half, not letting the scoreboard define our effort. I was please with our effort and how we fought the second half, but Angelo State was certainly better than us today."
