THE RUNDOWN

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M-International picked up its first conference win Saturday at the TAMIU KCB with a 65-61 win over St. Edward's. The Dustdevils hit their final four free throws in the last 22 seconds to hold off the Hilltoppers, who had been working from behind for most of the contest.

With 37 seconds left, SEU's (14-7, 4-5 Heartland) JAMES TAYLOR scored a bucket in the paint to cut the TAMIU (8-13, 1-8 Heartland) lead to 61-60. On the ensuing possession, the Dustdevils' Jeremy Wright was whistled for traveling giving the Hilltoppers possession with 33 seconds remaining under their own bucket. However, the Hilltoppers' LANDON GOESLING was whistled for an offensive foul. The Dustdevils capitalized with two free throws from Wright to extend the lead to three, and after SEU's SEAN WATKINS came up empty on two free throw attempts on the other side, TAMIU's Damon Leach iced the game with two more free throws with 15 seconds left.

Goesling scored 22 points for SEU in the losing effort with JAMES TAYLOR adding 19. The pair combined for 41 of SEU's season-low 60 points. Goesling hit a bucket in the first half to give SEU its only lead of the contest at 25-24, but other than that, TAMIU controlled the scoreboard.

THEY SAID IT
SEU Head Coach Andre Cook on the loss at TAMIU …
"All the credit goes to TAMIU. They've had a difficult season in a lot of ways, but they have competed in every game. We came out soft and flat and got what we deserved. Guys that we need to play well for us to win were no shows. We need to figure things out quickly as the calendar turns to February soon."
