Hilltoppers Hand LCU First Conference Loss

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward's looked in postseason form as they swept Lubbock Christian 3-0 Thursday evening to hand the Chaps their first Heartland Conference loss of the season. 

SEU came out blazing, executing their game plan to perfection early to build a six point lead, 12-6, shocking the Chaps in the first set. LCU regrouped and slowly inched back until closing the gap 14-14. St. Edward's had a response of their own, however, closing the set on an 11-5 run to win set one 25-19.

JULIA HARTLEY opened the second set with back-to-back aces, setting the tone for the set early. The Hilltoppers extended the lead to five, 10-5, before the Chaps began to claw their way back to finally take the lead 19-18. LCU held the advantage until the end of the set where SEU regained control to win the set 26-24.

It was a dog-fight the entire third set with 15 ties and nine lead changes. LCU took an important two point lead, 20-18, but the Hilltoppers refused to be denied the win and took set three 25-22.

The St. Edward's attack was astounding all night, led by ALEXA MCANDREW with 13 kills while MELISSA MCNEIL was unstoppable with 11 kills and a .500 attack percentage with no errors. As a team, the Hilltoppers hit .228 for the match. MORGAN BECKHAM posted 16 digs and JULIA HARTLEY led with 20 assists.

SEU improves to 14-10 on the year and 4-4 in Heartland Conference play. They return to the road to face Newman on October 25th at 7 pm.
