AUSTIN, Texas – For the second straight night the St. Edward's Men's Basketball team put on an offensive clinic in front of their home crowd, defeating Colorado Mesa 84-72 Saturday afternoon.
ASHTON SPEARS knocked down the first field goal of the game for the Hilltoppers, a three from the top of the key, and kicked off a frenzied first half. After the fifth tie of the game, 29-29, Spears heated up with back to back threes including one from five feet beyond the arc to put St. Edward's on top by seven, 37-30, with 3:45 to play.
COREY SHERVILL's three with three minutes left in the half gave the Hilltoppers their largest lead of the half, 40-30. Colorado Mesa was able to cut their deficit to six by halftime, 45-39.
Spears ended the half with 17 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, 5-8 from three point range.
SEU was slow to start after halftime as the Mavericks pulled within one, 48-47, just two and half minutes in. Over the next four and half minutes the Hilltoppers kicked it in gear, running out to an 11 point lead with a 15-5 run.
From there on out St. Edward's dominated, never allowing CMU closer than eight points in the final 13 minutes.
Spears ended the night with 25 points on 9-17 shooting, 7-13 from three point range with three rebounds and three steals. DORIAN LOPEZ added 12 points with six rebounds and LUCAS DORIA added 11 points. CORY MCKENDREE matched Lopez for a team high six boards. CMU's Connor Nichols led all scorers with 32 points.
SEU moves to 2-0 with the win. They remain at home to face Southwestern University on Tuesday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm following the women's game.
