STAUNCH DEFENSE COMPLETES WEEKEND SWEEP FOR SEU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The St. Edward's women's basketball team held Colorado School of Mines to less than 20 points in every quarter to win 69-62 Saturday evening.
 
ISABEL HERNANDEZ opened the game with a three and got the Hilltoppers off and running in the first quarter. Mines battled back but SEU's three-point shooting in the frame gave them a slight three-point advantage, 16-13, at the end of the first.
 
The game remained tight throughout the second quarter with neither team able to mount more than a three-point lead at any point in the quarter. St. Edward's consistent play allowed them to go into halftime with a slight one point advantage, 29-28.
 
Head Coach J.J. Riehl got the Hilltoppers refocused and they opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run through the first four minutes to post their largest lead yet, 40-32, with 5:39 remaining in the third. The Orediggers began to claw their way back into the contest and pulled within one, 40-39, before SEU embarked on another run to push the lead back to eight, 47-39, with 2:12 to play.
 
SEU took a three-point lead, 49-46, into the fourth quarter and Colorado School of Mines once again battled back to pull within one, 51-50 with 7:57 to go. St. Edward's had the answer, as usual, with a 12-4 run to lead 63-54 with just over three minutes to play.
 
The lead held as the SEU defense took control and closed out the game for the win.
 
Hernandez led with 20 points for the Hilltoppers, going 7-14 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range and 4-6 from the free throw line. CHRISTINA MASON and LEXI CUNNINGHAM both chipped in 13 with BAILEY HILL adding 10.
 
Hernandez led with eight rebounds while Hill added seven as the Hilltoppers were outrebounded 43-31 while collecting just three offensive boards.
 
St. Edward's improves to 2-0 on the year and come home for the first time this season to face Southwestern University at 5:30 pm Tuesday.
