LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball impressive late season run came to an end Saturday as they fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith in the Heartland Conference Championship.
SEU showed they were ready to play, leading early in set one. With the set tied 15-15 the Hilltoppers embarked on a 7-2 run that put them up 22-17. That lead was all that was needed for St. Edward's to take the first set with MIKAYLA PARKER's kill putting the exclamation point on set one, 25-20.
SEU led by as many as eight in the second set, 17-11, but AFSU clawed their way back into the match, tying the set 20-20. A kill by LAURA DOOCY got St. Edward's back on track, but the Lions stole the set with with a 5-0 run to the end, winning 25-22.
The second set win woke AFSU up as they rushed out to a lead and made quick work of the third set, winning 25-14.
With the momentum on their side the Lions were able to close out the match, defeating St. Edward's 25-17 in the third set.
ALEXA MCANDREW led offensively with 18 kills while KATE HENDRIX added 12. MIKAYLA PARKER headed up the defensive effort with seven blocks and JULIA HARTLEY led SEU with 26 digs.
McAndrew and Hendrix both earned All-Tournament Team selections.
St. Edward's ends the season with a 19-11 overall mark.
