AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's offense put on an impressive performance Tuesday evening, tying for the third most points scored in a single game in program history in a 125-66 win over Dallas Christian College.
St. Edward's matched the point total of the November 29, 1979 contest against Southwest Assemblies of God and was just four points shy of the most points ever. SEU has scored 129 points twice in program history, first against SWAGU in January of 1980 and again against Houston Baptist in February of 1997.
Just six minutes into the contest the Hilltoppers posted their first double-digit lead on a fastbreak layup by
ASHTON SPEARS to go up by 10, 17-7. After a Crusader three SEU went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to take a commanding 16-point lead, 26-10.
The Hilltoppers outscored DCC 20-7 in the final five minutes to lead 58-34 at halftime.
Within two minutes of the second half SEU pushed their lead to 31, 67-36, on an impressive alley oop by Spears, assisted by
AUGUST HAAS. Just over five minutes later the lead ballooned to 40, 85-45, as St. Edward's scored with ease in transition. The Hilltoppers eclipsed 100 points with eight minutes remaining in the game and never let off the gas to seize the dominating win.
Spears and
COREY SHERVILL led with 19 points each while
JAMES TAYLOR chipped in 14 points in 15 minutes while going 4-7 from three-point range. All but one Hilltopper that saw action scored, proving the depth of Head Coach Andre Cook's squad.
DORIAN LOPEZ and
CORY MCKENDREE had a team-high seven boards while Haas posted seven assists and Lopez four steals.
St. Edward's shot 58.3% from the floor and 38.5% from three-point range while holding Dallas Christian to just 33.3% from the field and 27.8% from long range.
SEU improves to 6-0 on the year and remain at home to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday for a 4 pm tip.
