Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – From the opening tip it was clear this was going to be a contest that would live up to its rival billing with nine ties, but SEU ultimately emerged with the 84-68 victory to improve to 8-1 on the year and remain perfect in Heartland Conference play.
COREY SHERVILL started the Hilltoppers off on the right foot with a three to open the game and SEU held on to a slight advantage until the 14:42 mark when St. Mary's tied the game 12-12.
After the sixth tie of the first half, St. Edward's went up by four, 43-39, with 1:23 to play on
LUCAS DORIA's layup. St. Mary's was able to close the gap by halftime, however, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 43-43.
St. Edward's opened the second half on an 8-0 run to post their largest lead yet, 51-43, two minutes in. St. Mary's answered with an 8-0 run of their own to tie the game 51-51. SEU responded with an 11-0 run fueled by five points by
DORIAN LOPEZ to lead 62-51 with 11:32 to play.
SEU never trailed the remainder of the game, blasting the Rattlers down the stretch.
ASHTON SPEARS led with 27 points, shooting 9-17 from the floor and 5-11 from three-point range. Shervill chipped in 16 and Doria 10. Lopez led with nine boards and five assists to lead SEU on the afternoon.
St. Edward's returns to action on Wednesday, December 5 for a rematch with their only loss of the season, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road at 7 pm.
