Hilltoppers two-game win streak over the Lions in the conference tournament is snapped

TULSA, Okla. –
The St. Edward's women's basketball season comes to a close Thursday at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center after a wire-to-wire victory for No. 2 seed UAFS in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Heartland Conference Tournament. FAIREN SUTTON scored a team-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting and LEXI CUNNINGHAM followed with seven points.
 
The Hilltoppers (11-17) and Lions (19-9) exchanged buckets to a 6-6 score to open the contest, but UAFS went on a 22-9 run that spilled into the second quarter to help build a 14-point margin. SEU kept its composure however, and a 7-2 run to end the half brought them within seven points as they entered halftime down 33-26.
 
After being held to ten points in the second stanza, Fort Smith outscored St. Edward's 21-9 in the third and despite a 10-5 run by the Hilltoppers to begin the fourth, a 10-1 run by the Lions ultimately put the game out of reach.



HIGHLIGHTS
• St. Edward's is 2-2 all-time vs. UAFS in the Heartland Conference Tournament and 9-13 in the all-time series.
• FAIREN SUTTON logged her second career double-digit scoring game of her career.
• LEXI CUNNINGHAM's eighth point was No. 350 for her career.
• ABBY HOPPER had a team-high of six rebounds, three assists, and one steal to go along with three points in the losing effort.
• BAILEY HILL's fourth point was her 600th of her career.
• BROOKE PANFILI's fifth point was her 185th of the season.
• ABIGAIL WHYTE recored her 20th assist of her career.

Coach J.J. Riehl's thoughts on today's game…
"Obviously Fort Smith was the better team today and they have been the better team all year. They do things to us that make it very difficult to score. Coming in we knew we had to limit turnovers and second chance opportunities and we didn't do that. I think they had 19 more shots then us coming off of 23 turnovers and 17 offensive rebounds and it's really that simple. We have to keep the game low-scoring and we didn't and that pretty much sums up the game."
