Texas Woman’s Sweeps Doubleheader with SB

Hilltoppers combine for 21 hits but fall short in both games vs. Pioneers

THE RUNDOWN

DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman's (20-10) pulled away late in each game of a doubleheader Wednesday to defeat St. Edward's (3-26) 11-4 in game one and 10-4 in game two at Pioneer Field.
 
In game one, St. Edward's led 4-3 through three innings thanks to RBIs from SAMI WILLIAMS, KATHRYN CONNELLY and SHELBY JANDA along with scoring on a wild pitch. However, the Pioneers scored eight unanswered runs in their final three at bats including five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take game one.
 
In the second contest, TWU book-ended its six at bats with four runs apiece in the first and sixth innings. After falling behind 4-1 after one inning, SEU rallied with two runs in the top of the second highlighted by an RBI single from KAYLA APPLEBY to cut the lead to one. From there, the teams exchanged runs in the bottom of the third and the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Pioneers. However, the home team scored a combined five runs in its final two at bats.
 
Abby Walker picked up wins in relief in both contests for TWU while KEELY FRAZIER and OLIVIA BURDICK took the losses for SEU in games one and two, respectively in the circle.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
• Kari Rodriguez had her fifth multi-hit game of the season and ninth of her career with a pair of hits in three at bats.
SAMI WILLIAMS scored a run and drove in another with a 2-for-2 outing offensively, and she collected her 18th career multi-hit game (fourth this season).
KATHRYN CONNELLY went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI; the freshman has five multiple-hit games on the season.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
SAMI WILLIAMS tallied three singles for her 19th career multiple-hit game and she combined for 5-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader.
SHELBY JANDA's two hits also came with an RBI, and it marked the fourth time this season (seventh in her career) that she's had two or more hits in a game.
LAUREN GARZA doubled and singled in the loss for SEU, and it was her fourth multiple-hit game of the season.
ASHLEY NASSY's single in the sixth inning was the 20th hit of her career.
• Kari Rodriguez's first-inning single was the 50th hit of her career.

STAT OF THE GAME
12 – SEU's 12 hits in game two was the second-highest hit total of the season for the Hilltoppers.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
St. Edward's resumes Heartland Conference play Friday and Saturday at home vs. Oklahoma Christian with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and a single contest Saturday at Noon.
