SB Sweeps Conference Doubleheader at Newman

Hilltoppers snap 19-game losing skid and pick up two league victories

THE RUNDOWN

WICHITA, Kan. – St. Edward's University's softball team got the monkey off its back picking up two Heartland Conference wins over Newman Sunday, with a  5-4 win in game one and an 11-3 run-rule victory in game two at the Newman Softball Field. The wins snap a 19-game losing skid dating to last year for the Hilltoppers (2-15, 2-4) and Newman dropped to 3-18 overall and 1-7 in league play.

In the first game, a four-run third proved to be the difference for St. Edward's highlighted by a pair of run-scoring doubles from SAMI WILLIAMS and KATHRYN CONNELLY that put SEU up 5-1. The Hilltoppers held off a Newman rally that saw the Jets score a run in the fourth and two in the sixth. REAGAN CARTER picked up her first win of the season and KEELY FRAZIER collected her first collegiate save.

In game two, SEU exploded for season-highs in runs (11) and hits (16), including a six-run third inning. Williams drove in three, Kari Rodriguez had two RBIs and freshman DEJA LEE's 3-for-3 performance was highlighted with a pair of RBIs. OLIVIA BURDICK picked up her ninth career victory with a complete-game win in the circle.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
    •    SHELBY JANDA's was 2-for-4 in the contest for her second multi-hit game of the season (fifth of her career).
    •    SAMI WILLIAMS drove in two runs including an RBI double in the third inning for her first multiple RBI game of the season and 10th of her career.
    •    REAGAN CARTER picked up her first win of the season allowing just three earned runs over six innings of work to improve to 1-5 on the year.
    •    KEELY FRAZIER had her first save in a Hilltoppers uniform pitching a scoreless seventh

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
• SEU pounded out season-highs in runs (11) and hits (16).
• SAMI WILLIAMS hit 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. WIlliams' run scored in the third was the 20th of her career and her first of three RBIs was the 40th of her career.
• Williams has 16 multi-hit games in her career and 11 games with two or more RBIs.
• SARA MACHADO put together her third multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate including a run-scoring single in SEU's six-run third inning.
• Kari Rodriguez went 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks while driving in two runs to aid the Hilltoppers offensively. Rodriguez now has three multi-hit games this season (eight in career) and two multi-RBI games (five career).
• LAUREN GARZA scored three runs, the most by a Hilltopper this season in any game, and she collected her first collegiate multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
• DEJA LEE was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs; it was her first collegiate game with multiple hits and first with multiple RBIs.
• OLIVIA BURDICK improved to 1-6 on the year in the circle with a complete-game victory; she struck out four and scattered his hits in the victory.

STAT OF THE GAME
5 - Senior catcher SAMI WILLIAMS had five RBIs combined in the doubleheader for St. Edward's.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Hilltoppers continue their Heartland Conference road trip Monday in Oklahoma City where they'll take on Oklahoma Christian in a twinbill at 1 p.m.
