MIAMI, Fla. – Barry University took control of the game early and was able to fend off the St. Edward's attack the remainder of the way to give SEU the loss in their season opener, 3-0.
Slick conditions allowed Barry to jump on top early as they scored in the eighth minute of the match. The Buccaneers added their second goal in the 26
th minute to lead 2-0 as the ball was centered from just outside the right side of the box and sent home with a one touch shot into the back of the net.
ANNABEL SWEENEY kept it from being 3-0 at the midway point of the first half with outstanding back-to-back saves on the goal line to keep the Hilltoppers within two. A free kick deep in Hilltopper territory gave Barry the opportunity they needed to extend their lead with under seven minutes to go in the first.
Despite some dangerous looks in transition SEU was unable to cut into the deficit before the break and went into the locker room down 3-0.
St. Edward's came out of halftime aggressive, getting good looks offensively, but were ultimately unable to put the ball away.
SARAH GUNDERSON led offensively for SEU with two shots, both on frame, while
FAITH GOLZ and
SARAH PRESTON notched one shot on goal each. Sweeney recorded five saves in goal in the loss. The Hilltoppers trailed 20-9 in shots but were an even 4-4 in corners.
St. Edward's drops to 0-1 on the year and remain in Miami to face Saint Michael's College for a neutral-site contest on Sunday at 9 am CT.
