GOLDEN, Colo. - After a scoreless first half #8 Colorado School of Mines scored two goals in the second half to defeat #15 St. Edward's 2-0 in the Hilltopper's season opener.
A methodical first half saw both teams being patient and tactical, seeking the perfect opportunity to attack their opponent. SEU posted two shots in the frame while CSM notched five.
Colorado School of Mines turned up the heat immediately after halftime and scored their first goal ten minutes in on a breakaway. SEU's JEREMY BISCHOFF's header less than a minute later was just left of frame to keep the Orediggers out in front.
KYLE HASTINGS' header in the 70th minute seemed to be the equalizer, but CSM's Drew Johnson made the save to again keep the Hilltoppers down 1-0.
With less than three minutes to play CSM's John Haist gave the Orediggers a little bit of breathing room by one-touching the ball into the back of the net to hand Colorado School of Mines the 2-0 win.
"We played well in the first half but our quality of play dropped off in the second half," said Head Coach Brian Young. "In the first half we created some great chances. We obviously need to put two solid 45 minutes of play together to get a better result on Sunday vs. Metro."
SEU trailed 16-4 in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal while WILLIAM TUFFIN recorded five saves in the loss.
The Hilltoppers start the season 0-1 and return to play on Sunday as they head to Denver to face Metro State at 2 PM CT.
