SEU Volleyball opens Hilltopper Classic with pair of sweeps

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's went 2-0 on day one of their home opening tournament, the Hilltopper Classic, Friday. The Hilltoppers defeated CSU-Pueblo and UT Permian Basin in straight sets.

MATCH 1: SEU 3 – CSUP 0

The excitement of playing at home for the first time this season was evident from the Hilltoppers from the opening serve. MIKAYLA PARKER posted three kills on six attempts while ALEXA MCANDREW was all over the court defensively with seven digs, leading SEU to a 25-21 set one win.

With all the momentum, SEU started set two by taking the first three points, forcing a CSU-Pueblo timeout. PETRA BRYDA and Parker kept the Thunder Wolves attack at bay, recording block after block in the second set and McAndrew was unstoppable with eight kills in the frame as the Hilltoppers dominated to win 25-15.

St. Edward's continued their domination in the third set and the outcome was never in question. Led by McAndrew offensively with five kills and NICOLE PETERS defensively with two blocks the Hilltoppers closed out the match winning the third set 25-17.

SEU held CSU-Pueblo to just .060 attack percentage for the match while posting an impressive 16 blocks in the win. McAndrew led with 15 kills on 27 attempts for a .519 hitting percentage and MORGAN BECKHAM had a team high 14 digs.

MATCH 2: SEU 3 – UTPB 0

Despite a lengthy break between matches the Hilltoppers were hot at the start of the second match and dominated from the first serve on to win set one 25-20 while hitting .237 as team.

UT Permain Basin applied some pressure in the second set and were able to force St. Edward's out of their rhythm a time or two, but the Hilltoppers once again prevailed to go up 2-0 with a 25-23 set two win.

The Falcons were determined not to leave without a battle as the third set saw 17 ties and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 22-22 a huge block from Parker and KATE HENDRIX gave St. Edward's the lead 23-22. After trading service errors MADDIE MIKSCH made the sweep a reality with an emphatic cross-court kill to secure the 26-24 win.

Miksch led with 12 kills while McAndrew was close behind with 11. MADISON HEALD posted 17 assists and EMILY TRAN added 14. Beckham and McAndrew led defensively with 18 and 17 digs, respectively, while Parker closed the match with five blocks.

St. Edward's improves to 4-2 on the year and look to complete the weekend sweep on Saturday, facing Eastern New Mexico at 10 am and Purdue Northwest at 4 pm.
