AUSTIN, Texas – A flurry of action in the first half gave way to defensive dominance as the St. Edward's women's soccer team defeated Lubbock Christian 2-1 Thursday to remain perfect in conference play.
LCU got on the board first with a hard-angled goal from Hollie Windham that was just beyond the reach of
ANNABEL SWEENEY diving to her left. The ball snuck just inside the far post to put the Chaps on top 1-0 in the 12th minute. The lead was short-lived, however, as SEU's
MADISON MCELWEE scored the equalizer with a rocket from 16 yards out 41 seconds later.
In the 33
rd minute
SARAH PRESTON notched her first goal of the year with a shot from 30 yards out to give the Hilltoppers the 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
St. Edwards' defense took over for the final 45, holding Lubbock Christian to only one shot which Sweeney handled with ease.
The Hilltoppers led 9-4 in shots and a shocking 10-1 on corner kicks.
With the win SEU improves to 3-2-1 on the year and 3-0 in Heartland Conference play. They remain at home, hosting Oklahoma Christian Saturday at noon.
