AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's was dominant in the three sets they won to open Heartland Conference play with a 3-1 win over Newman Thursday.
SEU could do no wrong in the first two sets, winning easily 25-15, 25-15 while hitting over .300 and holding the Jets to under .050.
Newman crept back into the match with a late run in the third set, stealing it from the Hilltoppers 26-24. St. Edward's got back down to business, however, and ramped up their defense to eventually win the fourth set 25-19 and secure the match win.
ALEXA MCANDREW and MADDIE MIKSCH led the attack with 13 kills each while MELISSA MCNEIL, MIKAYLA PARKER and KATE HENDRIX all chipped in seven. JULIA HARTLEY posted 22 assists in the win and led the team with 20 digs. Parker had an impressive seven blocks on the night.
The win improves SEU to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference. They remain at home to host Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday at noon.
